This catchment is situated between Enniscorthy and Bunclody in Co. Wexford. It is just over 1,100ha in area. Spring barley production is the main tillage enterprise while beef and sheep production are the main grass-based enterprises. Only about 10% of the land is poorly drained with the rest being classified as well-drained; as a result nitrogen is the main nutrient at risk of loss from this site through leaching.
We are continuously monitoring the catchment rivers for herbicides, even during the pandemic. This has generated a highly impactful dataset. The main findings to date are:
Chemcatcher passive sampling devices were installed in the Ballycanew and Castledockerell catchment outlets.
Students of Agricultural Science of WIT – Waterford Institute of Technology had a Field Visit in Castledockrell and Water Quality Lectures on 07th February of 2020.
Discussion group meetings (as shown in the photo) was extremely useful for presenting WaterProtect aims while recruiting well owners.
A kick-off meeting for the WaterProtect - Irish Actionlab was held by the project partners with invited supportive stakeholders on the 28th June 2017 at Teagasc Environmental Research Centre, Johnstown Castle, Wexford.
