Chemcatcher Installation

Chemcatcher passive sampling devices were installed in the Ballycanew and Castledockerell catchment outlets. The devices will remain submerged in the river for a period of two weeks during which they will passively measure the concentration of three acid herbicides (MCPA, 2,4-D and mecoprop). Unlike individual grab samples, which only provide information on water quality at that single moment in time, these passive samplers can provide a time-weighted-average (TWA) of the contaminants over the period of deployment (i.e. two weeks). Hence, passive samplers will provide a better understanding of the concentration of acid herbicides in the catchment over continued periods.
